New Aquitaine, a land of skills and « Savoir-Faire »

New Aquitaine is a land of excellence and innovation, a reflection of our region's history.

The region’s main assets? Its territories’ features and natural ressources (the sea, countryside and mountains), combined with the genius and creativity of its inhabitants. Whether it is in the field of fashion, cosmetics, interior design, tableware art, food, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is proud out its Men and Women, who strive each day to preserve our traditions and skills, while adapting constantly to new needs.

Limoges porcelain is a must in tableware art and is still present on the tables of the world’s finest chefs. Limoges enamel, which began in the Middle Ages with religious art, still shines and is now used to make unique jewellery.

Aubusson tapestry is registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and is still going strong, in museums as well as the world’s finest hotels. The « Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie » opened in 2016 and is a tribute to tapestry in the past and present.

The Hermione set off to conquer the oceans, from Rochefort where maritime savoir-faire has not lost its luster.  Basque Country’s « espadrilles » are now en vogue , and colourful Basque tablecloths can be found on tables all year long. As for the renowned “charentaise” shoes, they are as comfortable as ever and fashionable with new models being produced each and every day.

Leather-making is one of Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s major skills : gloves and belts from Saint Junien, nonpareil of France’s designer houses,  Laurige-Duron leather goods for the office, Repetto ballet and street footwear, Weston, and its famous « Moc » available in many colours.

New Aquitaine’s savoir-faire also includes cosmetics such as Sothys, la Roche Posay, surfwear, accordions, knives from Nontron, Creuse and Correze, lace made in Tulle, Rochefort and Angles sur Anglin…
