The very first Kiwifruit grew wild in a Chinese valley. Its seeds were exported to England in the 19th century, but it was only given the name « kiwi » (after the emblematic kiwi bird) when it arrived in New Zealand in 1906.
In the 1960s, kiwis arrived in the Landes area, thanks to Henri PEDELUCQ who imported the first kiwi plants from New Zealand. Nowadays, Adour kiwis grow at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, between the Landes and Pyrenees Atlantiques areas. There are about 350 Adour kiwi farmers. This particular type of kiwifruit has light-brown, fuzzy, soft skin. Adour kiwis are France’s only kiwis with two distinctive quality guarantees : a “Red Label” and the “IGP” label. The best time to enjoy Adour kiwifruit is from November to May.
Kiwifruit is an excellent source of vitamin C (twice as much as in an orange/lemon!) and vitamin K as well as a very good source of copper and dietary fiber. It is also a good source of vitamin E, potassium, folate and manganese. It helps reduce stress and contains a great number of antioxidants, which help prevent premature ageing. It also contains fiber, and is said to be a great appetite-surpressant (80% water).

*Landes pastis have nothing to do with the alcoholic beverage from Marseille ! In Gascony, pastis means « batter ». Landes pastis are a traditional type of pastry made with orange blossom.
