Poitiers, a trip back in time

All aboard for 2000 years of history ! The best way to discover this « Town of Art and History » is on foot or in a Raving Rabbids Time machine at Futuroscope theme park !

Poitiers, nicknamed “the 100 bell tower city” is a 90 minute train ride from Paris, 2 hours from Bordeaux and Limoges. Its lovely pedestrian streets take visitors on a journey back to the Middle Ages and to the Renaissance era.

White sculpted limestone facades, half-timbered houses near the famous Notre Dame la Grande church : one of Poitiers’s many Romanesque art gems…a tribute to the city’s rich history. The church façade was restored, unveiling its original « colours » : a true open book depicting pages of the Old and New Testaments, with scenes announcing Christ’s arrival to save humanity from the original sin…

In the old great palace room of the Counts of Poitou and the Dukes of Aquitaine, visitors can easily imagine Eleanor of Aquitaine and her favourite Limousin-born Troubadour, Bernard de Ventadour…. St Radegonde cathedral is just a few steps from the church by the same name. Its raised choir allows access to the crypt where queen Radegonde lies. Its frescoes are a foretaste of those in Saint Savin sur Gartempe and Saint Hilaire le Grand churches, both are part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Do not miss St Jean chapel, France’s oldest christian edifice. Its construction is said to date back to the 4th century: marble columns, frescoes… It is truly an amazing chapel! After touring Poitiers, you’ll enjoy the many café terraces and colourful lounge chairs on « place de l’hôtel de ville ».

Futuroscope park is also a must when visiting Poitiers. The theme park is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017. Dynamic cinemas, gigantic screens, dancing with robots… there are so many unusual attractions for visitors of all ages!
Martin Solveig and Luc Besson are just a few of the celebrities who brought their talent to the park, for rides such as « Arthur l’Aventure 4D » (Arthur's 4D Adventure), « les Lapins Crétins » (Raving Rabbids), « l’Age de Glace » (Ice Age)… The world-famous “Cirque du Soleil » even worked on a special night show for Futuroscope called « La Forge aux Etoiles ». 2017’s great new attraction : “L’Extraordinaire Voyage » (The extraordinary journey), inspired by the travels of Jules Verne.
